Exercise Science Major

Recommended Curriculum Timeline
The suggested program below is a recommended process; you should consult with an Exercise Science advisor no later than the beginning of your Junior Year.

General Sequence Suggestions

  • It is recommended that incoming freshmen avoid BIOL 246 Human Anatomy because it is a time-consuming course requiring significant organizational discipline. (It is open to second-semester freshmen.)
  • Success in BIOL 260 Human Physiology is enhanced by having completed CHEM 115 Introductory Chemistry I and BIOL 110 Principles of Biology.
  • Take EXSCI 356 Research Design in Exercise Science prior to MATH 138 Statistics.
  • Take PHYS 221 Introductory Physics I prior to EXSCI 347 Biomechanics.

Freshman Year
Enroll in liberal arts requirements; concentrate on chemistry, math and entry-level biology courses. Students should enroll in EXSCI 135 Concepts and Contemporary Issues in Exercise Science either as freshmen or by the beginning of the sophomore year. This course will provide students with the numerous opportunities available within the Exercise Science discipline as well as prepare them for successful completion of this discipline.

Sophomore Year
Continue with liberal arts requirements, but include BIOL 246 Human Anatomy and BIOL 260 Human Physiology as they are the most important prerequisites for many classes. Also consider continuing chemistry and begin taking physics courses.

Junior Year
Students must declare a major during their junior year and consult an advisor. EXSCI majors should review all required courses and electives and create a four semester plan. At end of junior year, concentration should be placed on senior seminar course EXSCI 496 and its requirements.

Senior Year
Plan fall and spring semesters to avoid increased work load in fall of senior year, due to work load of senior seminar course EXSCI 496.
