Assistant Professor of Music, Marva Duerksen holds a Bachelor
of Music (with greatest distinction) from Brandon University,
a Master of Music from the University of Alberta, and a Ph.D.
in Music Theory from the Graduate School and University Center
of the City University of New York. For her doctoral studies
at the City University of New York, Duerksen was awarded a prestigious
Gilleece Fellowship from the university, as well as a doctoral
fellowship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research
Council of Canada. Before coming to Willamette in 2001, she
taught basic and advanced music theory and aural skills at Queens
College, City College, and Hunter College, all of City University
of New York, and at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst,
where she served as Visiting Professor of Music Theory for two
years.
At the University of Massachusetts-Amherst she collaborated
with her colleague, Carl Wiens on a pedagogical project that
will culminate in an undergraduate textbook on musical form.
Duerksen has presented papers at regional and international
conferences. Her research interests include the history of musical
analysis, intersections between musical analysis and philosophy,
the pedagogy of music theory, and music of the Classical period.
