Rita Honka received her B.S. at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan where she studied Dance Education. She received her M.S. in Dance Science at the University of Oregon (UO) where she specialized in Human Motor Control. Currently she is a faculty member at the UO teaching Modern and African Dance. She is the founder and director of Dance Africa, a touring company that performs throughout Oregon. Since 1993, Dance Africa’s purpose has been to learn about dance traditions from a variety of African cultural groups, to honor, celebrate and work with those traditions and to create educational and entertaining performances for children and adults. The 15-member company of dancers, singers and drummers are currently in their eighth season touring grade schools in Eugene and surrounding areas. This year they will perform two shows at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts in Eugene as part of a statewide music camp for children. For the past eight years Rita has also been the modern dance teacher and choreographer for the Linfield Dance Ensemble.
